ABSTRACT
Marriage is the only institution that is as old as man which has both religious and cultural connotations. Religiously it is a divine institution that allows man to perform his conjugal duties, and culturally it depicts the cultural and traditional heritage of the people. However, modernity and secularity have infiltrated the religious essence of marriage to some extent. It has also watered down the traditional significance of marriage. Hence, this research work is designed to examine comprehensively the impact of modernity on Benin traditional marriage. One of the most important aspects of this study is the comprehensive concept of marriage in the Benin tradition. K-0This work employed the analytic and descriptive methodology. The paper reveals that the infiltration of modernization into the traditional marriage in Benin has both positive and negative effects/impacts. It also recommends ways in which the negative impacts can be minimized.
