ABSTRACT

The study investigated the Impact of Local Government Reforms on Socio-economic and Political Development in Nigeria. A Case Study of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The population of the study was 520 and the sample size investigated was 285. A simple random sampling was used for the study. Research questions were raised; four hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The instrument used in gathering the data was the Likert scale questionnaires, designed by the researcher titled, the Impact of Local Government Reforms on Socio­economic and Political Development in Nigeria. Split-half method was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. Chi- square statistical method and percentage were used to analyze the data with 5% confidence level. The major finding was that there is a correlation between local government reforms and socio-economic and political development of Oredo Local Government. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that there should be government intervention by urgently increasing local government allocations, Local Government Administration in Nigeria must be open to scrutiny as found with the state and federal tiers of government. Also, there is need for civil society to constantly demand transparency and accountability from local council officials.
