ABSTRACT

The focus of this study is to ascertain the impact of local government in the development of rural communities: a case study of Obubu community, in Udu local government area delta state. The sample of the study comprise local community of Obubu. In analyzing this research data, table and simple percentages were used. The findings indicated that local government usually get higher percentage of their total revenue from federal/state government. Also, it was discovered in the course of this study that Udu Local Government has performed below expectation in Obubu community. It was discovered that Udu local council has not been provides market, portable drinking water and other basic amenities to the people of Obubu community since its creation. In addition, it was also discovered in this research work that the causes of local government failure can easily be ascertained in Nigeria if properly investigated. It is there for recommended that the present effort to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide for autonomy for local governments is a step in right direction and should be pursued to its logical conclusion by the National Assembly.
