THE IMPACT OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING SERVICES ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impact of guidance and counseling services on students academic performance in selected secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo state. Four research questions were raised to guide the study and two questions hypotheses and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study used a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consisted of Two thousand students from some selected public secondary schools in Egor local government area of Edo State. The sample for this study was one hundred and forty (140) student selected randomly to represent the total number of students from the selected public secondary school. The instrument for data collection was subjected to face validity by the researcher's supervisor and two experts from the from the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counselling Psychology, all from Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. To determine the reliability of the instrument, test retest method of reliability was adopted. The instrument was administered to twenty (20) respondents who were not part of the study and was retrieved after two-week interval, and then readministered again, their opinions were inputted and correlated using Pearson product moment correlation coefficient. The instrument yielded an alpha value of 0.82. The data collected was analyzed using frequency counts and percentages.
