ABSTRACT
This study examinesThe Impact of Early Marriage on the Academic Performance of Girl Child Education in Nigeria in Ovia North East Local Government Area. The study adopts the survey research design on the bases of which data were sourced from a sample of 250 men and women. The data was analysed using simple percentage and chi-square statistical instrument. The findings show that there is relationship between early marriage and girl child education in Nigeria. This implies that many young women who marry at tender age may find it very difficult and challenging to go back to school. Illiteracy and poverty of the people does influence early girl child marriage in Nigeria. There is relationship between early marriage of the girl child and academic commitment that could reduce performance. The study recommends that parental and community engagement to change social norms should acknowledging girls' rights in society must be the first step towards eliminating gender inequality in education due to early marriage. Expansions should be primarily targeted towards rural areas with a poor state of public education with access to girls made a priority. Empowerment in an educational context is insufficient and it should be accompanied by community programs simultaneously addressing other drivers of early marriage. To deal with the problem of early marriage of girl child a number of strategies have been suggested mainly providing economic opportunities to young girls, promoting education of girls and using mass media to increase the awareness of the whole community about the consequences of early marriage on girls themselves, their family and on the community as a whole.
