ABSTRACT
This study investigates on the Impacts of drug and substance abuse among Undergraduates in Nigeria; case study of the University of Benin. Data collected was analyzed using "test and re-test" method for the study. The population of the study comprises of the 77,000 total number of students in the University of Benin, Benin City. The research instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into two sections. "Section A" was designed to generate personal information from the respondents. While "Section B" comprises of item of items on the topic under research. It was constructed with care to reflect the problem of the study such that the items would be relevant to the purpose of the study.
The instrument was reviewed and certified by the project supervisor and two(2) other experts in the Faculty of Education, all in the University of Benin. Findings revealed that the prevalence of drug and substance abuse among undergraduate students in Nigeria has become a significant concern due to its adverse effects on the academic, social, and physical well-being of individuals and the broader society.
Based on these findings, the following was recommended; That preventive measures such as awareness campaigns, counseling services, and the establishment of support groups. It is also crucial to enhance law enforcement efforts to combat drug trafficking and distribution networks. Furthermore, universities and educational institutions should implement policies and programs that promote a drug-free environment and provide adequate support systems for students strugglingwith substance abuse.
