ABSTRACT
The study examined the impact of domestic violence on the development of women in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. The objective of the study was to examine the prevalence of domestic violence in Egor local government; determine how domestic violence affect the development of women in Egor local government; ascertain the factors that lead to domestic violence in Egor local government of Edo state; investigate the consequences of domestic violence in Egor local government of Edo state and to identify the social work intervention strategies to combat domestic violence in Egor local government of Edo state.
The cross sectional research design was adopted for this study. 300 copies of questionnaire were distributed to respondents in Egor local government areas in Edo state. The collected data were analyzed by frequency count, percentages and means using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.The empirical result showed that the respondents agreed that that cases of domestic violence are on the high and show no signs of reduction in Nigeria; violence against intimate partners frequently occur among married couples regardless of age, tribe, religion, or even social status; that they have experience and witness domestic violence. The study recommend that appropriate laws and policies should be made at the state level to address domestic violence. Efforts should also be made to intensify the implementation of existing laws relating to domestic violence; and that women are encouraged to rise up to expectations and fight against the influence of sociocultural factors militating against their development and empowerment in the society..
