THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON GENDER BASE VIOLENCE

ABSTRACT

This study examined lockdown measures and domestic violence in Nigeria. The findings of the chapters were that the lockdown affected many aspects of man’s endeavors especially domestic violence. Women (in formal and informal businesses), aged, sex workers, animals (females), children, girls, maternal patients (pregnant and nursing mothers), widows, and animals all experienced varying forms of domestic violence during the lockdown. This had attendant negative effect on this vulnerable group by causing poverty and precarious livelihood, sexual abuse and murder, unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions, forced traditional/cultural practices and human trafficking/prostitutions, and child marriages. The first chapter provided an introduction to the study. It consisted of aims and objectives, scope of the study, as well as the methodology and chapterization for the study. A literature review was also carried out in this chapter. The second chapter survey the conceptualization of domestic violence and it examine the historical background of domestic violence, factor that necessitated domestic violence that the consequence of domestic violence as it relates to family and the entire society. The section also identify the prevalence of domestic violence within the family has serious implications for the development of the society and the psychological development of children. And that the future of any nation depends on the quality of its children and youths. Consequently, government must pay urgent attention towards eradicating the evil phenomenon of domestic violence in the Nigerian society. Efforts must be made to ensure that children grow up in stable and responsible homes, so that they can become responsible citizens.
