ABSTRACT

The study examined the impact of colonialism and its language use on the language planning and development of African indigenous languages. The research design adopted for this study was the narrative descriptive design. This research design required a systematic assemblage of facts and their presentation in an objective narrative style. The collection of data was through the use of personal interviews and documented materials. The instrument used by the researcher to gather data was wrting materials and a photocopier machine which was used to duplicate relevant documents. The framework adopted was the descriptive theory. The research findings showed that African languages are marginalixed and under used on the African continent because of the effects of colonialism. This has led to most African countries adopting colonial languages as their official languages which in turn has brought about a negative attitude towards African languages by Africans.
