ABSTRACT

Christian missions since their advent to Africa and Nigeria have continued to be an important part of many denominations and organizations in Nigeria. The rise of Pentecostal denominations has also contributed to the success and evolution of Christianity in Nigeria from the colonial to the postcolonial periods. Missionaries today focus on a wide range of activities, including evangelism, humanitarian work, education, and social justice advocacy. They also work in different parts of the world, including developed and developing countries, and they engage in cross-cultural and interfaith dialogue which is a continuation from their predecessors. Christian missionaries arrived in Nigeria first in the 15th century in Benin and Warri but were unsuccessful. It wasn’t until the 18th century when successful expansion and achievements of Christian Missions were recorded. The missionaries came for the purpose of spreading the gospel. Their major instrument of spreading the faith was through the introduction of education in Nigeria. They promoted literacy, study of indigenous languages and writing in vernacular. Also, they were agents of Nation-building in Nigeria as they introduced journalism and printing press(newspapers). This led to the spread of liberal ideas and political reforms, which paved the way for the rise of Nigerian owned Newspapers, nationalism and Nationalist leaders, that spread to various Nigerian communities.
