ABSTRACT
This research assessed the impact of air pollution and its associated health risk in Benin City. The study examined the; residents’ perception on the level of air pollution in Benin City, the major sources of air pollution in the city and the health risk associated with poor air quality. The study employed a cross-sectional survey design. Questionnaire was employed in evaluating the level of air quality and its associated impacts on the health of residents in Benin City. Findings indicate that while awareness of air quality issues is high in the study area, the level of pollution is also high. Findings also revealed a significant level. Socioeconomic and environmental factors such as poverty, occupation, age, lack of water, poor level of disappointment with the level of pollution in the city. Afternoon and the dry season are the periods where the worst air quality is experienced with the primary pollutants being pollens, emission from factories and industries and household cooking. Other significant pollutants include fuel-powered generating set, dust from the round, bush and refuse burning. Further findings revealed that respiratory irritations, skin problems, wheezing and coughing are side effects of exposure to poor air quality in the study area. The study recommended tailored messaging through the engagement of community leaders and critical stakeholders to improve the adoption of cleaner practices and regular engagement in environmental sanitation. A comprehensive air quality monitoring system is also advocated for to enable a continuous and effective management of air pollution across the study area. Investing in green infrastructure and the promotion of sustainable transport options is also advised with the aim of reducing air pollution. Environmental interventions such as provision of potable water and waste management facilities is also advocated given their criticality to the management of air pollution in Benin City.
