ABSTRACT
Agriculture remains a crucial sector in Edo State, contributing significantly to food security, employment, and economic growth. However, small-scale farmers in the region face numerous challenges, including outdated farming techniques, limited access to modern agricultural technologies, and financial constraints. This study examines the impact of adult education on the productivity of small-scale farmers in Edo State, focusing on its role in improving farming techniques, financial management, and market awareness. The study aimed to: (1) evaluate the extent to which adult education enhances the productivity of small-scale farmers, (2) identify the challenges farmers face in accessing and utilizing adult education programmes, and (3) assess the impact of adult education on farmers' financial management and decision-making skills. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A structured questionnaire was used as the primary data collection instrument, targeting a sample of 156 farmers from various rural communities in Edo State. A stratified random sampling technique was employed to ensure balanced representation across different demographic groups. Data collected were analyzed using frequency distributions and percentages, with results presented in tables. The findings revealed that adult education significantly improves farmers' knowledge of modern farming techniques, leading to increased productivity and better resource management. Farmers who participated in adult education programmes reported enhanced financial literacy, improved decision-making regarding farm investments, and greater market awareness. However, several barriers to accessing adult education were identified, including lack of awareness, financial constraints, distance to training centers, and limited practical training opportunities. The study concludes that adult education plays a pivotal role in transforming agricultural productivity by equipping farmers with relevant skills and knowledge. It recommends increased government support for adult education programmes, improved funding, and the integration of practical, hands-on training modules to maximize the impact of these initiatives.
