ABSTRACT
As marriage is closely connected to the culture of the people of Edo because they believed that marriage is ordained by God Himself, due to this fact everyone in the community and entire family of the ancestors takes it as their primary responsibility to adore and honor this obligation. Unlike the igayi-omo (to give out), the Benin oral tradition suggest that marriage by infant betrothal which is no longer practiced is an important and crucial part of marriage institution because it lies on the responsibility of both parents of the bride and groom to come in an agreement to give out their child’s hand in marriage.
