ABSTRACT
Art is not just a cluster of beautiful colors woven to capture a particular time, moment and experiences. Art portrays real world events. It humanizes man. Hence, art does not exist in vacuum. It is through art literature exist. Hence, literature is the mirror of life that exposes human culture, follies, ills. This essay aims to examine the folkloric nature of Camara Laye's African child and Adam Ibrahim Abubakar's Season of Crimson Blossom, thereby revealing the similarities and significance present in the texts. The research method adopted for this essay is a qualitative research method which will provide an evaluative and critical analysis of the texts, also analysing it's folkloric nature, and purpose in the texts. The primary texts used in this essay are Camara Laye's African child and Adam Ibrahim Ali Abubakar's Season of Crimson Blossom. Other relevant references will be secondary sources taken from online, articles, journals, textbooks, e-books, Magazines, Newspaper, Library materials. New Formalism theory is the theory adopted for this research as it proves to be the best to properly examine these texts. Different scholars have defined New Formalism theory in their own terms. According to Amandeep Rana, he defines New Formalism as the "critical approaches that analyse, interpret or evaluate the inherent features of a text". Hence, New Formalism is an approach that scholars use to investigate a text along with fragments of history and culture essential to the texts. This theory has to do with all folkloric elements and it's aesthetics: Rituals, proverbs, history of people and so on. Finally, this essay examines the folkloric nature of Camara Laye's African child and Adam Ibrahim Ali Abubakar's Season of Crimson Blossom to show how the authors were able to tell their stories artistically with the use of Rituals, African beliefs in communal living and superstition, and proverbs.
