ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to analyze the phenomenon of individuals dropping out of the Tertiary Institution, by identifying its factors. The study uses individual data about the Students at the University of Benin and Benson Idahosa University, which enabled a close assessment of the causes of individuals’ case of dropping out of school. These data were complemented with the administration of questionnaires to stakeholders in the educational system in Benin city, including the Parents/Guardians. The results obtained shows that, variables such as the level of health, students’ activities outside of school hours, socioeconomic class of household, the quality of education and lecturers’ support and supervision, are determinants of dropping out during the academic year, and the phenomenon of dropping out is more pronounced among the public university compared to the private university. In view of these results, policy elements have been formulated to slow the phenomenon of dropping out.
