ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to investigate the factors associated with the massive failure of students in Literature in English in Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo State. The research design was a survey research design. The population of the study comprised of all the SS1 students from two selected schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area Edo State. The sample of the study was 100 students. Using random sampling technique, a questionnaire was used to obtain information about the factors associated with the massive failure of students in Literature in English. A twenty five (25) item questionnaire was distributed to the students. The analysis of the data employed was the simple percentage. It was discovered that the factors associated with the massive failure of students in Literature in English are as a result of, poor quality of teachers, curriculum irrelevance and inaccessibility, students' lack of interest and motivation, socio-economic factors amongst others. Based on the findings, it is recommended that teacher training programs be improved upon, educators and teachers should create a learning environment that will enhance the interest and motivation of students, the curriculum for Literature in English should be more relevant and assessable, there should be a fair and accurate evaluation method, and provisions should be made for students' who face socio-economic challenges.
