ABSTRACT
In the framework of African society, this research examines the concepts of womanhood, identity, and cultural expectations. Both texts explore the difficulties of growing up as a female in a society that is predominately male. Themes related to education, empowerment and the desire for personal growth and independence even in the face of cultural constraints are expressed in this work. Lola Shoneyin and Aiwanose Odafen tries to explain to their audience the way the African society is ran. Both authors have been able to differentiate how the society sees men and women. It shows us how female characters are depicted in African women literary works and admits that women writers depict female character with a great deal of insight and meaningful interaction with their environment. In the analysis, we have been able to highlight some points to note as regards the societal rules and standards. Both authors through the study in chapter two shows how the African society reacts when one falls short of the standard it has set. According to the analysis, woman are supposed to aspire to marriage and make sure they reproduce as expected. Both authors also explain that the views of some individuals does not matter in the society as the society has a higher say than these individuals. It also goes further to chapter three to illustrate the problem of gender roles in regard to women in the family and the misguided belief of men being above infertility. This work also finds that motherhood can act as a point of conflict and or redemption as some influences of mothers in their children and vice versa is examined to stress on the importance and value of motherhood. We also see the importance of the male child and how according to the society, gives special affection to the male child and so in a way girls are devalued, neglected and denied opportunities open to their male counterparts.
