ABSTRACT

The emergence and spread of Plasmodium falciparum parasites with increased resistivity to artemisinin derivatives, and subsequent treatment failures after treatment with artemisinin based combination therapies (ACTs)) have raised concerns about the loss of the only highly effective treatment currently available to treat malaria. This study outlines the different mechanisms of resistance and molecular markers associated with resistance in Amartem. This study checked resistance to antimalarial drug (amartem) using the full blood count levels. This included packed cell volume, eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes and white blood cell counts. The quantitative analysis of these parameters showed that before treatment the PCV and WBC values showed a significant difference compared to the control. After treatment, there was no significant difference in PCV, and WBC values as compared to the control. There was no significant difference in the values of N, L and E before and after treatment. This result shows the drug resistance of falciparum malaria while the rest parameters are quite the same before treatment with Amartem and after treatment with quinine.
