ABSTRACT
The study examined counter strategies against fake news by select media houses in Benin City. The research aim was to identify the effective countering strategies used by select media houses in Benin City, to counter fake news, evaluate how effective those counter strategies were, and ascertain ways on how to make the counter strategies more effective in combatting the menace of fake news. The study was based on the Social Responsibility Theory of the Press. Research method was survey while the research instrument was the questionnaire. The findings showed that the consequences of misleading information can be severe, as it can cause individuals to make decisions based on inaccurate data, hindering their ability to make informed choices about critical aspects of their lives.
Based on the research, it was recommended that media organizations, as primary purveyors of information, have a crucial role to play in countering fake news, and can do so by establishing protocols to verify any and all information before publishing, ensuring that their content is accurate and reliable.
