ABSTRACT
Polyherbal medicine has its origins in ancient cultures. It involves the medicinal use of plants to treat disease and enhance general health and wellbeing. The seeks to evaluate the Anti-asthmatic activity of poly herbal formulated tea (Moringa oleifera, Citrus limon, Zingiber officinale, Allium sativum and Curcuma longa). The plants was purchased and prepared. The Guinea pigs were divided into four different groups, group 1 received oral administration of 2ml/kg distilled water. Group 2 received oral administration of 5 mg/kg of the polyherbal formulated tea. Group 3 received oral administration of 10 mg/kg of the polyherbal formulated tea. Group 4 received oral administration of 0.5 mg/kg of salbutamol.The guinea pigs were made sensitive to ovalbumin by receiving injections of it both intraperitoneally and intramuscularly. This sensitization treatment began on the second day and concluded on the fifteenth day. After this treatment, the animals were exposed to histamine, and the duration before they exhibited convulsions was measured. The following test was carried out Anti- asthmatic experiment, Antioxidant Analysis, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and Total Protein. From the result, the administration of polyherbal formulated tea at dosage of 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg extract at all dose level and standard (salbutamol, 0.5mg/kg) increase the latency to preconvulsive dyspnea. In the Antioxidant Analysis the administration of polyherbal formulation at dosage of 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg extract showed no significant difference at (P > 0.05) in gluthathione peroxidase enzyme level, gluthathione reductase enzyme level showed increase significant difference at (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), malondialdehyde enzyme level showed decrease significant difference at (P < 0.001, P < 0.05), catalase enzyme level showed incrrease significant difference at (P < 0.001, P < 0.05) and superoxide dismutase no significant difference (P < 0.05) when compared to asthma control. Antiasthmatic experiment showed the extract at all dose level and standard (salbutamol, 0.5mg/kg) increase the latency to preconvulsive dyspnea. The Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxide was not significant. In conclusion, the polyherbal formulated tea has potential as an anti- asthmatic treatment, possibly due to its strong antioxidant properties.
