ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to assess the efficacy of the 2020 lockdown in Benin metropolis, Edo state. The objectives of the study were to examine the factors which precipitated the 2020 ‘lockdown’, assess the level of compliance to lockdown policy, the socio-economic effects of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown across neighborhoods occupied by residents with different socio-economic status, assess the perceptions on the efficacy of lockdown in managing epidemics in developing countries, and proffer suitable alternative strategies for managing pandemics in developing countries.
The methodology used find out the perception/views of the respondents, a self-structured questionnaire and personal interview format were used. A total of 278 questionnaires were retrieved from the respondents. The responses from respondents were sorted out and coded using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, version 23). The results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive statistics involved the use of means and simple frequency and percentages, while the inferential statistics involved the use of T-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to test the acceptability of the null hypotheses. The results obtained indicates there is no significant difference in Covid-19 infection rate during the period of lockdown and during the period of free movement shows that there is no significant difference of covid-19 infection during the period of lockdown and free movement and there is no significant difference in the socio-economic impacts of the 2020 Covid 19 lockdown on neighborhoods of different socio-economic status shows there is significant difference in the socio-economic impacts of the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown in neighborhoods of different economic status. The study concluded that the2020 lockdown affected man, society and socio-economic activities and the impact was very devastating because there was a restriction on the daily lives of the people. The study recommended that there should be other alternatives in curtailing pandemic, lockdown is not the best option to tackle pandemic and also early preparation and provision of facilities and equipment will help to tackle the pandemic.
