THE EFFICACY OF ETHICAL GUIDELINES IN REGULATING MEDICAL RESEARCH IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

ABSTRACT

This project work x-rayed the effectiveness of medical guidelines and regulatory documents which were established to regulate biomedical research and protect human research subjects in developing countries. A critical analysis of some of these documents such as CIOMS Guidelines of 1993, 2002 & 2016 and the Declaration of Helsinki (DoH), 2000, 2008 & 2013 unveiled the short comings of these documents in adequately protecting the interest of developing countries considering the contextual difference between the western world which houses most researchers and research institutions and the developing countries that host most of these researches. There is need to have globally accepted guidelines that are indigenous to developing countries to avoid harm, exploitation and other adverse effects of medical research which are detrimental to developing countries.
