ABSTRACT
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to be important issues in public health,necessitating the exploration of novel and effective therapeutic agents. This study investigates the efficacy of Azanza garckeana leaves extract against microorganisms associated with UTI and STI in Wistar rats. In vivo experiments were conducted on the Wistar rats, where UTI and STI-causing microorganisms were induced, and the Wistar rats were administered with varying levels (25 mg/ml, 50 mg/ml, and 100 mg/ml) of concentrations of Azanza garckeana aqueous extract intra-rectally and some groups were administered with Ciprotab for comparison, the anti-microbial effects of A. garckeana's activities displayed a notable distinction between the control group and the other treatments. Nevertheless, the outcome indicated that the groups of test organisms treated with 100 mg/ml of the extract had more decrease in the occurrences of the microbes especially E. coli and S. aureus, the effects of the extract on bacterial load in the urinary tract and reproductive organs of the Wistar rats were assessed using the urine and vaginal swab samples of the rats. The results demonstrate significant antimicrobial activity of Azanza garckeana leaves extract against UTI and STI-causing microorganisms, leading to a reduction in bacterial load in the infected Wistar rats. The extract exhibited antimicrobial properties, contributing to the reduction of occurrences of microbes in the urine and the vaginal swab samples of the test Sorganisms. These findings highlight the possibility of utilizing an extract from Azanza garckeana leaves as a viable natural solution with potentials for combating UTIs and STIs and warrant further investigation to validate its clinical application in human subject.
