ABSTRACT
There is a substantial increase in the frequency of metabolic syndrome in the world and the use of herbal supplements for the treatment of illnesses related to metabolic syndrome. This study investigates the effects of Yoyo cleanser bitters on uric acid level and kidney function in rats fed with a high fructose diet. Twenty (20) male Wistar rats, weighing an average of 200grams each was used in this research. They were randomly selected into four groups of five. They were fed ad-libitum for the duration of the study, which was 28days. A normal basal diet of standard growers marsh was given to the control group, while the treatment feed of 60% High fructose diet (0.57mg/kg-bw) and 10% fructose water (600mg/kg-bw) was given to the other groups. Atorvastatin and Yoyo cleanser bitters was administered to group 3 and group 4 respectively using an oro-gastric gavage. The weekly weight of the rats, their daily food consumption, feed efficiency, the relative organ weight of the heart, liver and kidney were determined using standard methods at the end of the 28days study. Comprehensive biochemical assessment of electrolyte, urea, creatinine and uric acid levels was also determined. The data was analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey's test of significance. A p value of less than 0.05 (p<0.05) was accepted as statistically significant (p<0.05). The results of the study revealed that that Yoyo cleanser bitters significantly reduced sodium and uric acid levels when compared to the group fed only with high fructose diet. The findings from this study indicate that Yoyo cleanser bitters has anti-hyperuricaemic and reno-protective properties and can be a useful supplement in the prevention of changes related to hypertension and hyperuricaemia associated with metabolic syndrome.
