ABSTRACT
Vernonia amygdalina has been a known as medicinal plant used in Asia and Africa due to its pharmacological effects (antioxidant, anti-diabetes, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-malaria, etc). It is a dark green leafy vegetable commonly used in cooking and as a folkloric medicine for the management of several diseases in Nigeria. The effect of Vernonia amygdalina on male fertility has been of craved concern to researchers. In this study, the effects of Vernonia amygdalina on the testicular and epididymal morphology of Wistar rats was investigated. Vernonia amygdalina extract was administered to Wistar rats categorized into three groups. The rats in Group A, served as control, and was given equivalent grower mash feed and water for 56 days. The rats in Group B, were treated with Vernonia amygdalina of a dose of 100mg/kg body weight via oral route along with group A feeds only for 56 days. The rats in Group C, were treated with Vernonia amygdalina of a dose of 100mg/kg body weight via oral route along with group A feeds only for 56 days and the treatment was later withdrawn for 30 days. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed under chloroform anaesthesia and their testes and epididymides were harvested and fixed in Bouin's fluid for histological processing.
