ABSTRACT

In many traditional medical practices, herbal teas are employed as medicinal agents. Traditional medical literature held medicinal plants in high regard and considered them a gift from nature to mankind for the treatment of illness. In this study, the effects of a polyherbal-formulated tea containing Moringa oleifera (Moringa), Syzygium aromaticum (Clove), Curcuma longa (Turmeric), Allium sativum (Garlic), Zingiber officinale (Ginger), and Citrus limon (lemon) on hematology indices in ovalbumin-induced asthma in guinea pigs were studied. Four guinea pigs were placed in each of the four groups made up of the sixteen total guinea pigs. Group 1 guinea pigs were sensitized with ovalbumin and treated with 2 ml/kg of distilled water orally. Group 2 guinea pigs were sensitized with ovalbumin and treated with 5 mg/kg of herbally formulated tea orally. Group 3 guinea pigs were sensitized with ovalbumin and treated with 10 mg/kg of herbally formulated tea orally. Group 4 guinea pigs were sensitized with ovalbumin and treated with 0.5 mg/kg of salbutamol orally. After receiving treatment for 14 days, the animals were sacrificed by placing them in an airtight container containing chloroform. Blood was drawn and put in an EDTA container for hematological analysis. When compared to an asthma control group, 10 mg of the polyherbal-formulated tea increased white blood cell and platelet levels (p<0.05) but had no effect on lymphocyte, red blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell distribution width-standard deviation, red cell distribution width-coefficient of variation, or granulocyte levels (p>0.05). In conclusion, in animals (guinea pigs) given an asthma induction, a polyherbal-formulated tea will raise the white blood cell and platelet levels.
