ABSTRACT
The instrument for data collection was questionnaire this work falls under the domain of sociolinguistic. It captures the phenomenon of language endangerment using a language spoken in Abi Local Government of Cross River State – Legbo as a case study.
The study is a descriptive analysis of Legbo examining the absolute number of speakers, language use pattern and the language attitude within the study area with a view to determining the current state of the language as regards the issue of language endangerment. Titled: “The Effect of Language Endangerment: The Case of Legbo”. The subjects for the study comprise one hundred informants. Information gathered was analyzed using simple statistical methods. Findings revealed a clear case of a seriously endangered language which if not reversed could lead to language death. Measures for the revitalization of Legbo were also highlighted in the study.
This study will be helpful to students of research, linguistics, in terms of information and supply of data for future investigation, also it give the language under study an opportunity to be documented.
