ABSTRACT

Tetrapleura tetraptera is a well-known medicinal plant used for various purposes. Kidney diseases are on the rise globally, as a result, toxins which cause these kidney diseases are becoming a health concern and studies are conducted more regularly by researchers. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of hydroethanol extracts of Tetrapleura tetraptera on kidney function parameters in CCL4 induced toxicity. In this experimental study, male wistar rats were divided into five groups: a control group, a CCL4 treated group, a silymarin treated group of 140 mg/kg and two Tetrapleura tetraptera treated groups receiving different doses of Tetrapleura tetraptera (250 and 500 mg/kg body weight) along with CCL4 induction. The results obtained showed that exposure to CCL4 caused significant alterations to kidney function parameters. However, upon treatment with Tetrapleura tetraptera these negative alterations were reduced in a dose-dependent manner. The group that received the highest dose (500 mg/kg) of Tetrapleura tetraptera showed the most significant improvements in kidney function parameterscreatinine, urea and electrolytes. Conclusively, the hydroethanol extract of Tetrapleura tetraptera reduced the toxic effects of the CCL4 induced in the wistar rats by helping to maintain blood serum levels, compared to other doses and the control group. Thus, these findings point to the potential therapeutic use of Tetrapleura tetraptera in helping the kidney fight toxic metabolites. Hence, further studies need to be carried out with regards to the mechanism of action of the hydroethanol extract of this plant
