ABSTRACT

The effects of different levels of cadmium and lead on growth and chlorophyll content of Zea mays L. (maize) plant has been investigated in this study. The experimental set- up consist of three treatments namely- control, 2 and 4 ecological screening value (ESV). The experiment was arranged in completely randomized design and three replications under greenhouse conditions. Application of 2ESV and 4ESV contamination levels of Pb reduced Z. mays shoot height, leaf length, leaf number tolerance index, fresh and dry weight as well as chlorophyll content index of the photosynthetic leaves. The results showed that Pb is toxic to Z. mays plant growth putting into consideration, the reduced morphological growth parameter and chlorophyll content indices. Increased contamination level had reduced effect on shoot length, leaf length and leaf number when compared with the lower Pb contamination level.
