ABSTRACT
C-peptide, also known as connecting peptide, is a substance that plays an important role in the production and release of insulin in the body. It is released by the pancreas along with insulin, but unlike insulin, C-peptide is not involved in regulating blood sugar levels. C-peptide is often used as a marker for insulin production and can be measured through a blood test. This test is particularly helpful in differentiating between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In people with type 1 diabetes, very little or no C-peptide is produced due to the autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic cells responsible for insulin production. On the other hand, those with type 2 diabetes typically have higher levels of C-peptide due to their bodies producing excess insulin in response to insulin resistance. Traditionally some plants are used as herbs to treat certain disorders. Picralima nitida, a member of the Apocynaceae family is a West African plant with varied application in African folk medicine. In Nigeria the Yoruba’s call it Abere while it is called Osu in Edo language. Various parts of the plant have been employed ethno-medically as a remedy for fever, jaundice hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders and malaria. This study aims to evaluate the effect of daily intake of aqueous fruit pulp extract of Italian nitida on fasting blood serum level of C-peptide in sister albino rat. A total of thirty-five (35) male sister albino rats were used for this experiment. Group A (Dosage 400mg/kg), group B (Dosage 250mg/kg), group C (Dosage 200mg/kg), group D (Dosage 100mg/kg), group E (control group -Dosage 0mg/kg).
