ABSTRACT

Azadirachta indica, commonly known as Neem plant holds a prominent position in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, where it has been celebrated for its healing properties. It is stated that Neem helps to protect the liver from damage, which in turn helps to purify the blood and also minimize, chemically induced liver damage by stabilizing levels of serum marker enzymes and boosting levels of antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals and prevent damage. The aim of this research was to observe the effect of neem Azadirachta indica on the liver of the Adult Wistar rats. Twentyfive Wister rats were used for the purpose of this study, and were kept in polypropylene cages under room temperature and allowed to acclimatize for 2 weeks, during which they were fed with livestock mash and water ad libitum, before the commencement of the experiment. The rats weighed between 170g and 200g, and were weighed daily before commencement and throughout the duration of this experiment. The rats were placed into 5 groups consisting of 1 control group A, and 4 treatment groups B, C, D, E. The control group was fed with livestock mash only and water ad libitum, while the treatment groups were given livestock mash and Aqueous neem Azadirachta indica extract, according to their body weight for a duration of 28 days. Group A was the control and administered only feed mash and water. Group B was administered 60mg/kg of extract for 28 days. Group C was administered 120mg/kg of extract for 28 days. Group D was administered 240mg/kg of extract for 28 days. Group E was administered 480mg/kg of extract for 28days. After 28 days the experimental animals were sacrificed and the liver excised. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the organ weight across the groups when compared to group A, while significant weight loss was observed across the treatment group when compared to group A. It was observed that Azadirachta indica extract activated the immune response of liver cells across the treatment groups, hence hepatoprotective activity of Azadirachta indica on the liver.
