ABSTRACT

This study aimed at assessing the effectiveness of group counselling in preventing mental illness among undergraduate students of University of Benin, Benin City, Edo state. Four research questions were raised, the design adopted for this research is descriptive survey research design. The sample consisted of 270 respondents purposively selected from thirteen faculties of University of Benin, Benin city, Edo State. Questionnaires were used for the collection of data from 270 (two hundred and seventy) respondents who were students. The research instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and three other lecturers from the department. The test re-test method was adopted in testing the reliability of the instrument after which the research instruments were administered by the researcher himself. The data obtained were analyzed using Standard deviation. Findings revealed that group counselling is very effective in promoting students mental health while it also gives room for further research to be carried out to know the effectiveness of group counselling in their overall wellbeing.
