ABSTRACT
The study was carried out to determine “the effectiveness of adult education programmes in enhancing political awareness and civic engagement among nigerian adults: a case study of egor local government area of edo state”. Five research questions were raised. What is the current level of political awareness among adults in Egor Local Government Area. To what extent are adults in Egor Local Government Area engaged in civic activities. How are adult education programmes designed and implemented in the study area. What is the perceived effectiveness of adult education programmes in enhancing political awareness and civic engagement. What challenges and barriers impact the success of adult education initiatives in Egor Local Government Area. The population of the study will consist of adults learners in Egor local Government Area, Edo state. The total population is five hundred and two thousand seven hundred adults (502,700). Source: Field Survey,2024. The sample size adopted for this study is a total of 125 adults learners. The purposive sampling will be used to select all the population for the study. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of adult education programmes in enhancing political awareness and civic engagement among Nigerian adults: a case study of Egor local government area of Edo state. Four research questions were raised. This study made use of the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consisted One hundred and twenty five (125) adult learners which is also the sample respondents for the study. The instrument for data collection for this study was a self-constructed close-ended questionnaire titled “The effectiveness of adult education programmes in enhancing political awareness and civic engagement among Nigerian adults: a case study of Egor local government area of Edo state The test-retest reliability method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument and the process yielded an index of 0.81 Data obtained from the study were analysed using mean and standard deviation. In view of the findings and conclusions arising from this study, the following recommendations are made; There should be a diversification of adult education programmes to encompass various learning styles and preferences, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all members of the community in Egor Local Government Area. This could include incorporating technology-enhanced learning methods, communitybased workshops, and interactive seminars tailored to different demographics. There should be a robust monitoring and evaluation framework implemented to assess the impact and effectiveness of adult education programmes on political awareness and civic engagement. This framework should include both quantitative and qualitative indicators to capture changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors over time. Regular feedback mechanisms from participants and stakeholders should also be integrated to ensure continuous improvement. There should be collaboration and partnerships established between government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), educational x institutions, and community leaders to strengthen the delivery and sustainability of adult education programmes.
