The discharge of wastewater effluent into aquatic ecosystems has raised concerns about its potential effects on aquatic organisms. This study aimed to assess the impact of wastewater effluent on the expression of the interleukin beta 1 (IL-1β) gene in Clarias Gariepinus, a freshwater fish species commonly found in contaminated environments. Tissue samples were extracted from juvenile Clarias gariepinus gonad followed by RNA isolation, quantification and stablilization of the isolated RNA, synthesis of complementary DNA, and agarose gel electrophoresis. Fish were exposed to varying concentrations of wastewater effluent from a non alcoholic beverage company 7UP PLc Benin city, and the expression levels of IL-1β gene were analyzed using quantitative PCR. Our results indicate a significant upregulation of IL-1β gene expression in fish exposed to varying concentration levels of 5%, 15%, 35% and 50% respectively from 7UP waste water effluent compared to control groups. These findings suggest a potential link between wastewater pollution and immune system responses in aquatic organisms, as the response to non alcoholic effluent exposure was statistically significant (p < 0.05), highlighting the importance of monitoring and mitigating anthropogenic impacts on aquatic ecosystems.
