ABSTRACT
This research evaluated the effects of vote-buying on democratic consolidation in Nigeria, concentrating on the Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The research aims to identify the core causes of vote-buying in this region, explain various forms of this practice and its risks to democratic governance, analyze its consequences on democratic processes in Egor, and provide solutions to minimize vote-buying. The study examined the whole population of Egor Local Government Area, totaling 258,442, based on the 2006 National Population Census, with a sample size of 60 respondents. Research data were examined using descriptive statistics and Chi-square testing to explore correlations between independent and dependent variables. The findings suggested that greed, poverty, and illiteracy were significant drivers of vote-buying in Egor, aggravated by economic issues in Edo State. Ineffective law enforcement and a lack of consequences further exacerbated this problem. Vote-buying has harmful implications, including the infringement of citizens' rights, diminished political accountability, obstruction of potential leadership, and the promotion of corruption. To address these concerns, the report advocated broad reforms, such as improving the election process, boosting civic education, and encouraging transparency and ethical behaviour among political players.
