ABSTRACT
The main objective of this investigative study is to analyze the effect of social media language on the writing skills and academic performance of students, a case study of students of university of Benin, the survey research method was used, subjects were drawn from the faculty of arts using the simple random sampling technique and purposive sampling
Research findings showed that students are addicted to social media and they make use of the social media language when chatting. Due to a great deal of time they spend online the students get too familiar with the social media language which results to interference of the language in their formal writing, this causes academic setbacks and poor performance in formal expression due to failure in creating a balance between social media and academic activities.
It is recommended that social networking sites should be innovated to enhance academics and also, lecturers should create writing policies that abolish such errors that arise from such interference, this will compel students to create a balance and set parameters between social networking and academic activities
