ABSTRACT
The prolonged use of smart digital devices is one of the basic causes of digital eye strain and the use of the 20-20-20 rule has been shown to prevent or ease the symptoms that follows eye strain. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of the 20-20-20 rule on accommodation following smartphone use. The total number of subjects used for the test was 30. The data obtained was analyzed using SPSS version 20.0; the statistical test used was paired t-test and the descriptive statistics were range and mean standard deviation. The finding of NRA before and after one hour of watching movie with and without the 20-20-20 showed there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in the NRA value after watching movie. The finding of PRA before and after smartphone use with and without the 20-20-20 rule showed there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in the PRA value after watching movie. Analysis of the NRA after smartphone use with and without the 20-20-20 showed that there was no significant difference (P>0.05).Analysis of the PRA after smartphone use with and without the 20-20-20 rule showed there was no significant difference (P>0.05). It was concluded from this study that the 20-20-20 rule has no significant effect on the NRA/PRA after smartphone use.
