ABSTRACT
Tetrapleura tetraptera is a plant that is distributed in the lowland forest of tropical Africa and is used as a seasoning spice and for the management of various ailments. This study aims to ascertain the effect of 40mg T .tetraptera saponins (TTS) on hematological parameters of diabetic Wistar rats and compare with a standard anti- diabetic drug (Metformin), using standard methods and procedures. 28 male Wistar rats weighing between the range of 180-200g were used for this study. These rats were fed with normal basic diet and water, and acclimatized for two weeks. During this period, the animals were weighed and divided into four groups of 7 rats each. Group 1 – normal control, group 2- diabetic control, group 3 – Diabetic rats treated with metformin, group 4- Diabetic rats treated with TTS. The rats except the normal control were induced with diabetes using streptozotocin. At the end of 12 weeks, the rats were sacrificed by decapacitation and blood samples were collected using EDTA anticoagulant bottles for hematological analysis.
From the experimental study carried out, it was observed that there was an increase in leukocyte levels of the diabetic untreated and diabetic treated rat groups but no significant effect was seen in thrombocytes and erythrocytes levels.
The result from this study showed that treatment with Tetrapleura tetraptera saponins could slightly alter the hematological parameters of STZ-induced diabetic Wistar rats.
