THE EFFECT OF SPENT ENGINE OIL ON PLANT GROWTH AND SELECTED ENZYME ACTIVITY IN MAIZE PLANT (Zea mays L.)

ABSTRACT

Spent engine oil disposal has led to the pollution of a vast land used for agricultural purposes. In this study, maize plant (Zea mays L.) was planted in soil that was treated with different concentration of spent engine oil (5ml, 10ml and 15ml per 1.5kg soil). The leaves were collected after 2 weeks, 3 weeks and 4 weeks. Activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, lipase, total protein concentration, lipid peroxidation and chlorophyll content were assayed for. It was observed that spent engine oil reduced the growth rate. The chlorophyll content was significantly reduced (p<0.05). Activity of superoxide dismutase was significantly lowered (p<0.05) .Significant increase (p<0.05) in catalase activity and lipid was observed. A significant decrease (p<0.05) in total protein concentration was observed. A significant decrease in lipase (p<0.05) was observed. These findings suggest that spent oil pollution induce damage in plants, and limit food produc4tion in affected areas.
