ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of poly-herbal formulation of Greenwayodendron suaveolens, Euphorbia heterophylla, Vernonia amygdalina and Xylopia acthopica, on haematological parameters of albino rats induced with freund adjuvant arthritis and antifungal sensitivity on nasal organisms, Greenwayodendron suaveolens, Xylopia aethiopica, Vernonia amygdalina and Euphorbia heterophylla are medicinal plants of African origin. G. suaveolens and X. aethiopica belong to the family of Annonaceae, while V amygdalina is of the family of Asterales and E. heterophylla is of the family of Euphorbiaceae. The plants were collected, dried, milled and decocted. Complete Freund adjuvant model was used to induce arthritis in the rats because the model mimics rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The poly-herbal formulation was administered to 9 albino rats in three groups, with 3 animals in each group. While the remaining 9 animals were grouped into 3 control groups, with 3 animals each. After arthritic assessment, the animals were euthanized using chloroform in an airtight bucket and were dissected using a dissection kit. The organs of each animal were harvested and preserved in a mixture of normal saline and formaldehyde. 5ml of blood was collected from each animal via cardiac puncture and poured into EDTA bottles for haematological tests. The blood was analyzed using Haematological Analyzer SYMEX KXN21 (Japan). From the results, the poly-herbal formulation of did not alter any haematological indices or caused toxicity on the animals. For antifungal susceptibility testing, the media used was Saboraud Dextrose Agar. It was prepared according to the manufacturer’s instruction. From the result, it was observed that the aqueous extract of the poly-herbal formulation was more effective than the standard antifungal drug, Metronidazole.
