THE EFFECT OF PAXHERBAL BITTERS ON GLUCOSE AND INSULIN LEVELS IN MALE WISTAR RATS FED HIGH FRUCTOSE DIET

ABSTRACT

Dietary high fructose is the primary cause of metabolic syndrome and damages tissues and organs. A collection of symptoms known as the metabolic syndrome (MetS) include low levels of HDL cholesterol, central obesity, raised blood pressure, higher plasma triglycerides (TG), impaired glucose tolerance or insulin resistance, and microalbuminuria. This investigation examined the effects of Paxherbal Bitters on insulin and glucose levels in Wistar rats on a high-fructose diet. At the beginning of the experiment, twenty (20) male Wistar rats were divided into four (4) groups of five (5) rats each, with an average group weight of 200.0±1.0g. These groups are as follows: Group 1 is the control group; for four weeks, it is given a baseline diet and clean tap water. Group 4 is the experimental group, Group 3 is the high-fructose diet plus ten percent fructose water + atorvastatin (0.57 mg/kg-bw) group, and Group 2 is the high-fructose diet plus ten percent fructose water group. For four (4) weeks, the rats received their dosage after being gavaged. The rats were then killed, and blood samples were obtained using standard procedures to test insulin and fasting blood glucose. Insulin resistance was assessed using the HOMA-IR index. The results of the experiment show that the high-fructose diet increased the rats' fasting blood sugar, HOMA-IR index, and insulin levels. Nevertheless, this effect was lessened by the administration of atorvastatin and Paxherbal bitters. Therefore, it becomes sense to assume that using Paxherbal bitters may help prevent insulin resistance and hyperglycemia caused by a diet rich in fructose. Consequently, while insulin resistance is connected to the metabolic effects of a high-fructose diet, pacherbal bitters may prevent insulin from increasing, as well as hyperglycemia and insulin resistance.
