ABSTRACT
This project titled as “The effect of particle size of local stones used as coarse aggregate in Akoko-Edo on the mechanical properties of concrete” focuses on the determination of mechanical properties of concrete produced from locally sourced aggregate. This work seeks to obtain valid results on workability of concrete and compressive strength using different particle size of aggregate obtained from Akoko-Edo individually; which are size 9.35mm, 12.5mm and 18.75mm.
In this present study, three granular fractions of coarse aggregate which are size 9.35mm, 12.5mm and 18.75mm were used to make different concrete mixture. Density, workability of concrete and compressive strength was determined for each size of aggregate for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Concrete workability was obtained using the workability apparatus; cone (300mm height, 200mm base and 100mm top), tamping rod, base plate. Concrete was mixed using the concrete mixing machine, concrete cubes was made with a mold of 100mm×100mm×100mm. Failure load of cubes was obtained from the compressive strength testing machine, compressive strength was determined by dividing failure load by the loaded area
Results have reviewed that concrete mixtures with 9.35mm, 12.5mm and 18.75mm aggregate have given slump result of 50mm, 40mm and 30mm, while after 28 days of curing 36N/mm2, 36.33N/mm2 and 44N/mm2 was obtained respectively. In was concluded that there is increase in compressive with increase in particle size of coarse aggregate and there is a decline in workability of concrete with increase in particle size of coarse aggregate.
