ABSTRACT

Intermittent fasting comprises dietary patterns in which individuals consume minimal or no energy over extended periods, alternating with periods of regular food intake. There are different approaches to intermittent fasting, with one of the most common being time restricted fasting and the 12:12 variant of TRF (time-restricted fasting) was implored in this study. Oxygen is crucial in the generation of energy through oxidative phosphorylation and is a requisite for the metabolic needs of active cells within the body. When the blood contains insufficient oxygen, it becomes unable to adequately supply the organs and tissues with the necessary oxygen to sustain their proper functioning. Fasting could possess the ability to affect the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of overnight fasting on oxygen transport potential of blood. Sixty (60) apparently healthy individuals both male and female within the age of 18-30 years were employed for this study. 5ml of blood was dispensed into EDTA container and sent for analysis. The result showed elevations in the RBC, HBG , PCV, MCV, MCH, MCHC values during the fasting phase when compared to the non-fasting phase but not statistically significant (P>0.05) consistent with the work by Azizi, 2002. In conclusion, intermittent fasting enhance the oxygen carrying capacity of blood.
