ABSTRACT

There are claims that the medicinal plant Justicia carnea has a variety of pharmacological effects, including the ability to increase blood flow. One of the most widespread endocrine illnesses, diabetes mellitus also has several metabolic syndromes. Use of herbal medications has always been an option to treat a wide range of illnesses, including diabetes and its complications and cancer. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a methanol extract of Justicia carnea on the haematological parameters in rats that had been given streptozotocin to induce diabetes. The Lorke's approach was used for the acute toxicity test. In six (6) groups of six (6) rats each, thirty-six (36) albino wistar male rats were divided. All rats were given a single 50 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin, with the exception of the normal control group. The diabetic rats in group 2 received no treatment, group 3 received the anti-diabetes drug metformin at a dosage of 50mg/kg and groups 4, 5 and 6 received 100, 200, and 500 mg/kg of the extract orally once daily, respectively. Group 1 (the normal control) received water. There were 21 days of treatment. Fasting blood glucose levels were measured at the conclusion of the treatment period and cardiac punctures were used to obtain blood samples from the animals for the analysis of the haematological parameters. At the end of the experiment, It is possible to conclude that justicia carnea extract improves haematological qualities in experimental diabetic rats after repeated therapy for 21 days because the data shows that justicia carnea administration to diabetic rats increased the levels of the haematological indices especially when the extract was administered on a high dose.
