ABSTRACT

The study focused on the effect of methanol leaf extract of Simarouba glauca (MESG) on oxidative stress biomarkers in male Wistar rat. Five hundred grams of Simarouba glauca was saturated with 2.5L of methanol and was left for 24hours, then centrifuged while the filtrate was freeze dried. A total of 30 male Wistar rats were used; divided into six groups of five rats each. Test rats were given MESG 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 mg/kg body weight respectively, daily for thirty (30) days. At the end of the study, the rats were fasted overnight, sacrificed and the liver was harvested. The liver homogenate was obtained and assay for Malonaldehyde, Glutathione, Glutathione peroxidase was determined. The Results showed insignificant decrease and indicated no changes (p ˃ 0.05) in Malondialdehyde levels; the liver GSH-PX were significantly (P ˂ 0.05) expressed and repressed at the concentration 500 mg/kg respectively. Conclusively, MESG elicited marked alterations in selected endogenous oxidative stress biochemical biomarkers.
