THE EFFECT OF INGESTION OF VARIED DOSES OF GREEN TEA AND COFFEE ON LUNG FUNCTIONS OF ADULT MALE SUBJECTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN.

ABSTRACT

The consumption of green tea and coffee has long been associated with potential health benefits, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (Kim and Kim 2013) Most individuals use coffee to stay awake and alert all night without considering the effect it has on the lungs. Numerous studies (Paola et al., 2005) have explored the individual effects of green tea and coffee on various aspect of health, including their potential impact on lung function but there are scarcity of research specifically investigating the effect of administration of combination of green tea and coffee on lung function. A total of  apparently 20 healthy males subjects were recruited for this study.  Prior to the research, subjects were asked to abstain from exercise, alcohol, coffee and substances containing caffeine through out the period of the research. The study was conducted in the physiology laboratory, University of  Benin for a duration of 5 weeks. The subjects were randomize into two groups: Group A (Experimental) and Group B (Control). They were given a specific dose (2g and 4g) of coffee, green tea, combination of coffee and milk, green tea and milk and green tea coffee and milk  (Eteang et al., 1999). Spirometric measurement were taken from each subject following the ingestion. Prior to the spirometric measurement, Antriometric measurement were taken. Subject were also educated on the research and informed consent gotten from them. All data were analyzed using the Graph Pad Prism Statistical Software, version 8.1 and result presented as ± SEM and p<0.05 was considered  statistically significant. Results revealed significant increase (P<0.05) in FVC and FEV1  following the intake of combination of 4g of coffee and milk and also a significant increase in PEF following the intake of coffee only, combination of green tea and milk, combination of coffee and milk only when compared with the control (P<0.05). They were no significant difference in FVC following the intake of 2 grams of coffee only, 2 grams of green tea only, combination of 2 grams of coffee and milk; green tea and milk and coffee, green tea and milk;  4 grams of coffee only, green tea only; green tea and milk and coffee, green tea and milk. And also FEV1 following  the intake of 2 grams of coffee only, green tea only, combination of coffee and milk; green tea and milk and coffee, green tea and milk were insignificant. In conclusion, the observation effect shows that  green tea, coffee and milk as well as their combination has effect on the respiratory parameters (FVC, FEV1, PEF).
