ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of having a business on the academic performance of university students. In order to actualize the objectives of the study, various literature and theoretical issues were discussed. The instrument used for the purpose of this research was the primary research instrument (questionnaire). The mass of information generated from the questionnaires was summarized in form of table and analyzed using frequency, simple percentage and mean. The researcher administered three hundred and sixty (360) questionnaires to respondents, out of which same number (360) were retrieved for the purpose of presenting and analyzing responses to issues raised in the questionnaires. The hypotheses were tested using the regression analysis technique.

The findings from the analysis revealed among other things that: there is a significant relationship between business ownership and time management of University Students; the analysis further revealed that there is a relationship between business ownership and grades of University Students; and the study revealed that there was a positive and significant relationship between business ownership and goal settings of University Students.

The study recommends amongst others that; university students who own business should effectively manage their time as it relates to their engagement in business and academic activities; for enhanced grade level, university should ensure that their businesses can be operated with little physical presence needed as such would ensure that they are fully engaged in their academic activities; and they should ensure that they set business and academic goals in every school session as such ensures an independent sense of direction and obligation to both goals thereby enhancing students’ academic performance.
