ABSTRACT

The study investigated the effect of guidance and counselling services on secondary school students' attitude towards their academic pursuits. It involved 120 students from SS1-SS3 in selected senior secondary schools in Oredo LGA, Benin City. The research analyzed the influence of access to guidance and counselling services on students' academic performance, the effects of counselling programs on students' attitudes towards academics, and the specific aspects of counselling services contributing to positive changes in attitudes and academic performance. Additionally, it examined the challenges faced in implementing effective counselling services and proposed solutions to address these challenges. Data collection involved administering questionnaires to the students, and the findings revealed several key insights. Regular meetings with counsellors positively influenced study habits, boosted confidence in schoolwork, and aided in coping with academic stress. Students showed increased persistence in studies, better understanding of study strategies and career possibilities, and greater motivation to attend classes due to the availability of counselling programs. Specific aspects of counselling services, such as individual attention from counsellors, group counselling sessions, career guidance, and motivational talks, significantly impacted students' academic performance positively. In conclusion, the study emphasized the significant role of guidance and counselling services in enhancing secondary school students' academic pursuits. However, challenges such as insufficient training for counsellors and lack of awareness among students remain prevalent. Proposed solutions include ensuring accessibility of counselling services, fostering positive attitudes towards counselling among students, and addressing challenges through increased training for counsellors and awarenessraising workshops.
