ABSTRACT
Gongronema latifolium (GL) is a medical plant commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes. The effect of GL extract on liver incretin GLP-1 levels in ST7, (streptozotocin)-induced diabetes in rats has been subjected of several studies. Studies have shown that treatment with GL extract can significantly increase GLP-1 levels in the liver of STZ-induced diabetic rats. GLP-1 is a hormone that plays a key role in regulating glucose homeostasis and insulin secretion and reduced blood glucose levels. In addition to increasing GLP-1 levels, GL extract has also been shown to have other beneficial effects on diabetes, including reducing blood glucose levels and improving insulin sensitivity. However, more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms underlying these effects and to determine the optional dosage and duration of treatment with GL extract.
Overall, the available evidence suggests that GL extract may be a promising natural treatment for diabetes and may have potential as a therapeutics option for improving glucose homeostasis and insulin secretion in diabetic individuals.
