THE EFFECT OF GLUCOSE CONSUMPTION ON AMPLITUDE OF ACCOMMODATION

ABSTRACT

Glucose is known to be the most important source of energy for the body. An uncontrolled and sustained high blood glucose level tends to affect the accommodative system of the eye by causing changes in the lens glucose metabolism. Research shows that lower amplitude of accommodation exists in individuals with type 1 diabetes when compared with age matched non-diabetic counterparts. However, little or no studies have shown the immediate effect of glucose intake on accommodative lag and amplitude of accommodation of young subjects without diabetes.  A total of 30 young adults aged between 24-28 years with normal blood glucose level were used. The subjects were comprised of 15 males and 15 females. Routine examination as well as a pre-test on glucometry, minus-lens to blur and binocular fused crossed cylinder were then conducted before the ingestion of 12.5g of glucose and 19g of glucose by the female and male subjects respectively. A post-test on minus-lens to blur and binocular fused crossed cylinder were conducted 30, 60 and 90 minutes after ingestion of glucose. The result showed a mean amplitude of accommodation of 8.23±0.64 before glucose intake; 7.44±0.83, 6.95±1.01 and 7.62±0.61 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes after glucose intake respectively. The mean accommodative lag was 0.45±0.23 before glucose intake, 0.27±0.22, 0.47±0.37 and 0.31±0.17 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes after glucose intake respectively. Paired t-test at 0.05% level of significance, showed that amplitude of accommodation reduction was statistically significant (P=0.000) at 30minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes respectively. Accommodative lag change was equally significant with P-values of 0.001, 0.018 and 0.011 at 30, 60 and 90 minutes after glucose intake respectively at (P˂0.05).
